STEM Explorers Program Description

The STEM Explorers program is an afterschool high school program designed to encourage students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by exposing them to real world STEM applications and problems. The program provides participants hands-on, inquiry-based learning units that engage them and exposes them to scientific experiences that are meant to encourage them to pursue science, engineering and/or technology in high school and college.  The program is facilitated by target school based teachers certified to teach STEM courses. Program activities include afterschool classroom presentations, hands-on laboratory experiences, technology-centered instruction, female and/or minority STEM related guest speakers, and off campus field experiences.


STEM Explorers Teacher Position

LNESC is currently accepting applications for a Science teacher for our UBMS Summer Program. This year’s science focus will revolve around 3D Printing. The teacher would be responsible for teaching students:


  • Why 3D Printing is important in today’s world.

  • Pertinent 3D Printing Terminology.

  • How to build a 3D Printer.

  • How to use 3D Printing software

  • How to print using a 3D printer.


The position is one hour a day four days a week, plus an additional hour paid for prep time at the rate of $25/hr.


The program takes place at UPenn Monday-Thursday beginning July 1, 2015 - August 7, 2015, between the hours of 8am-12:30pm.


Minimum Recommended Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred in the area of competency
    (math, science or other STEM field, English composition, foreign language, etc.).

  • Teaching experience in area of subject competency.

  • Ability to assess academic needs and evaluate participants in an academic setting.

  • Ability to document contacts and track academic progress.

  • Experience in a similar college-bound program preferred.

  • Must indicate either professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to
    those confronting the target population from which participants will be selected.
