AT&T ¡Adelante! America Program
The AT&T ¡Adelante! America Program works to cultivate optimism, build resilience, and improve the academic skills of Latino students. The goal of the program is geared towards successful high school completion. Characterized by a commitment to shared values and driven by a common mission, the ¡Adelante! America Program aims to foster a network that increases the capacities of Latino leaders to effectively address the challenges Latinos face throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. The program is currently administered in Bayamon, Puerto Rico at the Escuela Dr. Augustin Stahl and Columbia Heights Education Center in Washington, D.C.
The program aims to supplement LNESC’s college access pipeline via leadership and career exploration workshops. Ten workshops are conducted for approximately 40 participants from grades 10th – 12th during the spring semester. Workshop topics include education, health, government, engineering, culinary arts, technology, self-esteem, and the AT&T cyber-bullying webinar. Through academic counseling, hands-on activities, and discussions with professionals from a wide array of backgrounds, these workshops provide students the opportunity to explore numerous degree and career opportunities, as well as participate in capacity building exercises to prepare them for their post-secondary education and the workforce.
Through such workshops, students were not only able to explore different career opportunities but learned about the tools and confidence needed to pursue a college degree as well. Families are engaged during the kick-off and closing ceremonies of the program. Utilizing the Admissions Packet, Abbas video, and materials provided by AT&T, participants receive the opportunity to learn what a digital footprint is and how it can impact college admissions and employment opportunities.
100% of students achieved on-time grade promotion. The average cumulative grade point average for fall 2016 and spring 2017 was 3.58.
65% of participants plan to attend a two or four-year college or university leading to an associate’s or bachelor’s degree following high school graduation.
“The workshops have been very beneficial in preparing us for the future. The speakers not only educate and help us in exploring different careers but also to follow our passion. Their experiences and guidance have been invaluable. I wish other students had access to this type of program to help them prepare for their futures as well.”
