Connecting Community to Education: LNESC in the Field
LNESC Houston
Upward Bound Math and Science: LNESC Houston has continued to provide Upward Bound students with uninterrupted program services and activities to prepare them for high school graduation, college entry and beyond. The program is funded by the Department of Education and students meet every week via Zoom to attend daily after school-school tutoring and instruction for math, English, and other subjects.
Students also received in-person counseling at Raul Yzaguirre High School for Success (RYSS). Janet Guajardo, UBMS advisor set up chat rooms to meet, tutor, advise and mentor the students..
Talent Search: Talent Search programming in Houston is on its second year of funding and staff are busy working towards meeting all objectives and goals set forth through the Department of Education Talent Search. The Talent Search program is demoing an exciting new initiative. The Director provided coffee and pan dulce in the morning and called it “Café con Pan Dulce with the Director.” It took place both in the morning and afternoon session and allowed parents to take advantage of speaking in both English and Spanish. The greatest part of the initiative was for parents realizing that the LNESC programming has the best interests’ students in mind to ensure a successful middle school, high school and college experience.
Houston LNESC faced many challenges that required thinking outside of the box and becoming creative in the delivery of services in culturally relative format, which can include providing bilingual services or delivering materials/programming in a digital format. Houston LNESC will continue to utilize these formats while also exploring additional avenues to perform student outreach and encourage parental engagement with student’s educational journeys.
