LULAC National Education Service Centers Inc. Announces 2015-2016 NBCUniversal/LNESC Scholarship Program Recipients
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Created and funded by NBCUniversal, the LULAC National Educational Service Centers, Inc. (LNESC) is pleased to announce the NBCUniversal /LNESC Scholarship program recipients for the 2015-16 academic year. Ten students from across the U.S. were selected to receive a one-time scholarship of $5,000 to pursue a degree at U. S. post-secondary institutions.
“The NBCUniversal/LNESC Scholarship will allow me to further advance my college education without having the financial burden of acquiring debt from student loans. I will be able to focus on excelling in the classroom as I continue to work on advanced graphic design projects and studios that require a great deal of time, research, and production. I am very appreciative to NBCUniversal and LNESC for this amazing opportunity,” explains Carlos Velasco from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.
Recipients were selected based on their academic performance, professional goals, and interest in the entertainment industry. This year’s NBCUniversal/LNESC Scholarship Program recipients are:

“NBCUniversal is proud to partner with LNESC in providing access to young and talented diverse students. NBCUniversal recognizes the importance of investing in our communities, and scholarship programs are a meaningful way to forge relationships with local organizations that champion the needs of diverse communities and help students pursue their career dreams," said Craig Robinson, Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, NBCUniversal.
“As the educational arm of LULAC, LNESC not only strives to deliver the highest quality educational services to enroll students in post-secondary institutions, but to see that they have the tools and resources necessary to complete a four-year degree and enter the workforce. It is only through our partnerships with generous corporations, such as NBCUniversal, that we are able to continue providing financial resources to promising Latino students from across the country,” says LNESC Executive Director Richard Roybal.
According to the Pew Research Hispanic Center, a record-setting 69 percent of Hispanic high school graduates enrolled in college last year. Despite the attainment gap narrowing, however, Hispanics continue to lag behind their counterparts in obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
Since 1973, LNESC has focused on creating a menu of developmentally appropriate educational initiatives. These model programs are designed to help the organization reach its mission of providing the highest quality education programs needed to help members of the Hispanic community become life-long learners and leaders. Through these efforts, LNESC has contributed to the academic success of 500,000 promising Hispanic and disadvantaged students and has provided more than $20 million to nearly 26,000 students.
